Administrative Mail

Receiving Mail

Central Mail Services delivers incoming USPS mail and intercampus mail to Columbia's campuses. Most departments receive at least one mail delivery each business day.

Address Format

Incoming mail to the University should be in the following format:

Columbia University
Personal Name
Program, Title, or Department
Mail Code
Street Address, Room Number
New York, NY Zip Code

Mail Codes
Inclusion of the mail code on all incoming USPS mail is extremely important. If not included, your mail may be delayed or not delivered. It is also important that the mail code be placed above the street address, since the USPS' scanning equipment could read it in error, causing delays.

Only Morningside campus locations have mail codes. For other locations, please contact the appropriate Mail Services office for off-campus addressing requirements.

Street Address
Be sure to include the complete street address of the building in the address block. Listings of these addresses can be found in the Columbia University Directory.

The building name is not necessary, but if included should appear below “Columbia University” and above the street address. It is important that the room number be placed on the street address line.

Packages

Packages sent through the USPS are delivered to the appropriate office by Mail Services. Certified and registered mail requires a signature. Outside vendors such as FedEx and UPS will deliver directly to offices.

Please note that the "Delivery Confirmation" from the USPS only confirms delivery to the Zip Code Post Office (the Manhattanville branch for 10027) and not Central Mail Services.

USPS Information

Incoming mail that is too large to fit inside a departmental mailbox will be delivered, when necessary, directly to the department. Certified mail and mail that requires a delivery signature will be delivered by a member of Mail Services directly to the department.

Misdirected mail should be placed in the campus or departmental mailboxes.

Personal items should not be sent to your departmental address. Central Mail Services cannot be responsible for items not pertaining to official Columbia University business.
