Columbia Mail Processes Nearly 46,000 Packages During Fall Rush 2026

Columbia Mail achieved a record-setting pre-delivery season while maintaining efficient service and short wait times for students throughout the rush.

October 05, 2026

The Columbia Mail team processed 45,790 packages throughout August and September, supporting students as they prepared for and settled into the new Academic Year.

Overall package volume was down 6% compared to Fall 2025, but the season remained exceptionally busy. Volume fluctuated, with a dip in August followed by an increase in September activity, as students continued furnishing their residence halls and ordering items needed for classes and campus life.

Package Pre-Delivery Sets New Record

A major highlight of this year's operation was the continued success of Columbia Mail's Pre-Delivery Program, which reached a new milestone. The Mail team successfully delivered 10,866 packages directly to student rooms, representing a 2.5% increase from last year and setting a new record for the program.

Columbia Mail's Pre-Delivery Program allows students to begin shipping packages to campus August 1, weeks before arriving for move-in. The team makes their best effort to deliver packages received before the mid-August cutoff date directly to student rooms prior to Check-In. By having packages waiting in residence halls upon arrival, students avoid making additional trips to the Student Mail Center and reduce the burden of moving items across campus.

Fall Rush 2026 by the Numbers

The Student Mail Center also recorded more than 21,000 student visits during the Fall Rush period, a 5% increase over last year. Despite the higher number of in-person visits, the center maintained an average wait time of just three minutes, only 10 seconds higher than last year's average.

  • 45,790 packages processed during August and September
    • 6% decrease in total package volume compared to Fall 2025
  • 10,866 packages pre-delivered directly to student rooms
    • 2.5% increase in pre-deliveries year-over-year
    • New all-time high for the Pre-Delivery Program
  • 21,000+ Student Mail Center visits
    • 5% increase in customer visits compared to Fall 2025
    • 3-minute average wait time
    • Only 10 seconds higher than last year's average wait time

Maintaining short wait times during peak periods requires significant planning and coordination among Mail staff. Package intake, room deliveries, customer service operations, and carrier processing all increase substantially during August and September as thousands of students move to campus and begin receiving shipments.

As package volumes continue to evolve, Columbia Mail remains focused on enhancing the student experience while maintaining the operational excellence that has made the Pre-Delivery Program a success.
